Sex

Over the past ten years there has been a substantial increase in diagnosis of sexually transmitted disease particularly among young peole with 16 - 24 year olds most at risk.

In a Bradley University survey (2008); UK was the 'one night stand' capital of Western industrialised nations in Europe. Men and women are taking more and more sexual partners with practices like; going to orgies, joining sex clubs and indulging in 'dogging' becoming 21st sexual fashions.

STD's

London has the highest rate of diagnosis per 100,000 poupulation in the UK. Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STD and Genital Warts the most common viral STD. These and syphilus have seen a steady rise since 1999.

HIV

In the 1980's three main risk groups were identified;

  1. Men who had sex with men
  2. Injecting drug users
  3. People who received treatment with blood products

Many of these peole came forward for testing and the numbers declined 1990 - 97. In 1999 there there was a sharp increase again peaking in 2005 with a slight decrease 2005 - 2010; however these numbers are still higher then in 2003.

Heat treatment of blood eliminated risk from treatment with blood products. This has been replaced by a new category; Hetrosexuals (accounting for 20% of infections).
