Risk of Injury

The cold weather's making it virtually impossible for Londoners to keep up their exercise routines.

Accident and Emergency departments have reported a record number of people falling over on the ice as the temperature continues to hover around freezing. The most common injuries are fractures which has lead to sustained pressure on hospital wards.

People determined to exercise are being warned to take extra care in this weather. The ground is harder underfoot because of the ice, and water in outdoor pools will be colder, which could cause problems if you haven't warmed up.

When jogging, you're advised to stretch fully, holding each stretch for at least fifteen seconds, focusing on your quads, calves, ankles and shins. Swimmers are encouraged to spend shorter periods in the water, and should avoid getting straight into a hot shower.

The NHS has further information on exercising in the cold.

SLIPS AND TRIPS SELF HELP ADVICE

-Rest - to protect the damaged tissue from further injury

-Ice - apply a bag of frozen peas or similar to the area

-Compression - wrap a bandage round the swollen part to reduce pain and swelling

-Elevate - raise the injured area as high as comfortable

-Referral - Seek appropriate medical help as soon as possible

Where to exercise in winter

Although many joggers and swimmers in the capital are being put off by freezing temperatures and the risk of injury, LCC News discovered a great number of you are braving the cold.

There are lots of outdoor swimming pools open in London throughout the winter months, and Brian, the lifeguard at Tooting Bec Lido says many peoplen choose to become members at this time of year because they want to experience the freezing water.

Watch the video on the right to see Londoners swimming in the Serpentine in Hyde park this week, and click here to find your nearest outdoor pool.

But if you'd rather exercise indoors, lots of London gyms are offering deals on membership for the New Year. For a list of gyms near you, click here.

Exercising in the snow-not likely! I find it hard enough on a balmy summer's evening. Saying that,I did hear of two boys who went swimming in a lido in January this year, so it can be done...
