Keep safe with Krav Maga

Krav Maga is a self defence form which originates from Israel and has been in the West around 50 years longer then traditional martial arts.

Unlike Karate and Judo and other martial arts forms, Krav Maga is a form of self defence which is for use on the street, not tournaments.  There are no rules, no belts, no levels, just effective ways to protect yourself against attack.

While Krav Maga is effectively street fighting, it's becoming quite popular amongst celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie.  So much so that a celeb filled club has been opened in LA to cope with demand from celebs wanting refresher courses.

Krav Maga is becoming quite popular in London too with the amount people joining classes increasing.  This is maybe not surprising with the media constantly being filled with stories of knife and gun crime and politicians talking of 'Broken Britain'.

LCC went down to a Krav Maga class in Covent Garden to find out more about.

There's no bowing, no fresh white uniform and no bare feet... Urban Krav Maga is raw fighting!

But one must not confuse this with brawling and being a hard man looking for a fight.  These people are training to protect against those kind of people and distance themselves as far away from them as possible.

While this does not stop people coming to Urban Krav Maga to learn mealy how to fight, the instructors ensured me that they can easily spot these people and they will be asked to leave.

Another difference of Urban Krav Maga is 'pressure testing'.  This involves physically exerting ones self until out of breath.  After this with a partner you mock attack each other.  The idea is to train yourself to be able to fend off an attack even if you're feeling a little worse for wear.

The most important thing about this form of self defence is that in a short space of time a person of any age, any size, male or female can be effectively counter an attack on them.

'exerting yourself until out of breath'? In a sport? What next? Sounds like a yuppie fad to me. Only fools would do it. There's no gain if there's no PAIN!
